Winter

15 Jun 2017

Winter

Winter sky:
Gray and heavy.
Damp cold air
Trickled under
Collars and sleeves.
Numbs fingers
And cheeks and nose.
Warm breath
Steams like
Boiling water.
A shiver. A shake.
Pull my hat
Down tighter.
Hunch shoulders
And start walking.

A Rainy Night

20 May 2017

5/13/17

A Rainy Night

Rain pouring.
Road markings
Disappearing.
Stop lights,
Car lights,
Reflecting
On wet streets.
Cars creeping.
Drivers praying
Others are
Being as
Cautious as they.
Wipers swishing,
Barely able
To keep up
With the water.
A rainy night
In Richmond.

I Love

27 Apr 2017

3/24/17

I Love

I love,
In the spring
When the fields
Start turning green
Like a carpet
Of velvety Irishness.
Wheat and
Alfalfa
That have lain
Sleeping all winter
Awaken
And reach
For the sky,
For the sun.
Reach for life.
I want to
Shed shoes
And walk barefoot
Through its
Silky soft look;
My feet sinking
Into tender blades.

Over Night

27 Apr 2017

4/27/17

Over Night

Over night the woods
Have become peopled
With the green of leaves.
Where before I could
See deep within of
Trunks and branches, now,
All is a curtain
Of rich bright emerald.

Morning

20 Aug 2016

Morning

I like the rhythm of day.
I get up in the darkness,
and watch the light slowly seep
through the air in soft gray waves.
First, there’s a building’s shape:
then its form becomes sharper.
A window, a door appear.
Bushes change from blobs to plants.
A branch. A stem. Finally
see individual leaves.
Subtle gray slides to white;
from ghostly gauzy to clear.
Brighter, with every second.
Waiting. Watching, with held breath
until the first beam breaks free
and the sun peeks into day.

August Mid-day

20 Aug 2016

8/18/16

August Mid-day

Bright sunshine
caresses
the noon hour.
The sun has
burnt away
early fog.
Rain drenched earth
starts to steam.
Leaves quiver
in a breeze.
Cicadas
call for a mate.
Another
August day.

Lazy Day

20 Aug 2016

Lazy Day

A lazy day.
A day for napping,
reading, tomato
sandwiches, iced tea.
Staying in pajamas.
Not answering the phone.
A do-nothing day.

August Day

20 Aug 2016

8/18/16

August Day

Cloudy, muggy day.
It’s mild for August.
Knowing it won’t stay
this way when the sun
breaks in through the clouds.
And once it has won,
temperatures will rise;
air will start to steam.
But that’s no surprise,
Since it is August.

Purple Rain

10 Aug 2016

4/24/16

“Purple Rain”
by BAMorris

I see rain as gray,
dingy and dark.
Prince saw purple.
The color of desire,
longing, hoping for
something that
has not yet come.
The soft lilac
of summer;
The magenta-
purple of
pulsing life;
The dark purple-blue
of night and dreams.
The color of kings,
of royalty,
that befitted
his own name.
He saw rain through
the rainbow
of his own
experiences.
Purple rain.

Fire

26 Oct 2015

10/4/15

Fire

It’s fireplace weather.
Time to lay the wood.
Strike the match and hold
It to kindling.
Flames begin to dance.
Feel the warmth chasing
Away the cold damp.
Relax and settle
Into the light, heat,
Comfort of fire.
